SWAPS!

Kez is a little more creative than Prismo so there’s not really a 1-1 gender swap universe thing going on here. Also some events are altered to fit the characters better. Some characters either remain the same or are swapped with completely original characters

⚠︎ The elements are also swapped around for this au, with the exception of lumpy space! ⚠︎

BACKGROUND

Ryan Akagi and Min-Gi Park are childhood friends who dreamed of starting a band together. However, after a disagreement, the two drift apart for the summer. Ryan leaves town but returns home to try and convince Min-Gi to do the band thing with him once more. However, when he returns to the Park residence, he is told that Min-Gi is approaching a train to take him to university, and left Ryan a note. Ryan rushes to the train station just before Min-Gi boards and convinces him to rejoin the band. Min-Gi surprisingly agrees and they travel the world together to perform. Over time, they fall in love, even planning to get eloped.

FINDING THE CROWN

At some point in their travels, Ryan's van breaks down in the middle of a new town and they have to hunker down at a motel for a few days until the they can get the van fixed. They spent the last of their money on a motel as well as van repairs, and were looking for something to eat. Ryan did some odd jobs here and there so they could get by. Eventually he works for a jeweler, where he finds the fated crown. A fire breaks out, causing everyone inside to panic and knock stuff over. Ryan came across the crown alone on the floor. He's not proud of this, but he eventually ran off with the crown in the hopes of pawning it off for enough money to keep them set for a few months. He returns to the motel to Min-Gi with the crown. Ryan assures his worried boyfriend that he made it out safe and sound, and that this crown was their ticket to getting out of there. To try and cheer up Min-Gi, Ryan puts on the crown as a joke. But if you're familiar with the story of Simon Petrikov and the magic crown, you can see how this goes. After Ryan came to his senses, he was deeply disturbed and threw the crown on the ground. The motel room was in flames and Min-Gi was nowhere to be found. In the midst of the madness, he could briefly see Min-Gi's terrified expression in the flames. He never saw Min-Gi again after that.

RYAN AND GRACIE

Ryan's state gradually worsened through the years as a result of the crown's magic. He constantly felt overheated and prone to hot flashes, which got worse the more he put on the crown. At some point after the Mushroom War, he comes across a little demon girl in a blue ballet leotard alone and crying. To cheer her up, He finds a little turtle plushie in the wreckage and hands it to her. He finds out her name is Grace, and decides to take her along with him as they try to brave the post-war world together. Ryan continued to use the crown more and more, which terrified Grace because she saw first hand what it was doing to him. At some point she exposed some of her demon powers (soul sucking to be exact) to be able to protect the both of them without Ryan using the crown. This worried Ryan because he didn't want the little girl to put herself in danger to keep them safe. Ryan realized that he would soon completely succumb to the crown's effects and was worried about potentially hurting Grace. So he eventually sent for her father to take care of her while Ryan left her with his tapes and letters.

CURRENT DAY

Ryan Akagi is presumably gone, and in his place is a destructive, vengeful and perpetually belligerent being known as the Flame King. He built his entire kingdom off of volcanoes and seas of lava. He created his own court of his "family" (who looked like crudely made volcanic versions of his own family from decades ago) and denizens to roam the land. Although he himself doesn't remember what he was so angry about, he continues to take it out on the inhabitants of Ooo. He particularly targets the Ice Kingdom, where the Frost Princess (Emily) resides, because she was the first to view the Flame King as a threat and took action to contain him to his kingdom. This obviously didn't work, leading to decades worth of conflict between the two kingdoms, to which Lake and Alan Dracula were deployed to put a stop to his attacks. After the cast becomes aware of Ryan's past before the Flame King, they are a little more sympathetic towards him, but ultimately tend to be wary and avoid him due to the destruction he's caused before. Ryan himself doesn't notice the change in attitude, but he is notably less eager to randomly attack people (aside from the Ice Kingdom). He's still very much haughty and a jerk to others, but he at least considers Grace a friend.

MEETING MIN-GI AGAIN

When the Flame King loses his magic powers and completely reverts back to Ryan, but his "actual" age starts to catch up to him, so he implores Grace to help him create a time portal to apologize to Min-Gi before he passes. The procedure works, and Min-Gi jumps through the portal at the last second to reunite with his lover. After he realizes Ryan is dying, Min-Gi sets off to get his magic powers back. Ryan is apprehensive of this at first, not wanting to revert back to what he was as the Flame King, but Min-Gi promises he'll find a way to keep Ryan alive without the crown once he's safe. Once Ryan gets his powers back and becomes the Flame king again, he does not seem to remember anything that's happened.Min-Gi, convinced that his beloved boyfriend is in there somewhere under that fiery exterior, tries to get him to remember his past to no avail. Flame King begins to fall in love with Min-Gi all over again like he did as Ryan, and surprisingly becomes gentler and more careful as a result. Although Min-Gi feels discouraged about not being able to bring Ryan back, he still tries to make things work with the Flame King, and they grow close as a result.Word spreads that the Flame King has a new boyfriend, to everyone's surprise. Although Ryan is not an elemental, The Frost Princess Emily is concerned that romance may trigger an extreme reaction that will cause Ryan to burn through the earth's crust and burn it from the inside out. So she enlists Lake and Alan Dracula to stop the Flame King and Min-Gi from getting any closer to kissing (although Lake initially interprets this as Emily being bitter and not wanting the Flame King to be happy.) Their attempts to separate the two become more and more ridiculous, causing Min-Gi to become fed up and hide away with Ryan away from an annoying kid and their magical deer so they could be alone together. The kiss unfortunately goes as Emily expects, and Lake and AD have to step in before the entire world burns out. Min-Gi throws himself into the hole that Ryan left, Alan Dracula covering the top to stiffle oxygen from fueling the flames. It works, but because flame needs oxygen to thrive, Ryan's severely incapacitated and eventually passed out. Min-Gi manages to revive him but passes out from a lack of oxygen himself. Alan Dracula manges to save the both of them, and the world is safe. The Flame King is deeply worried for Min-Gi and stays by his side until he recovers. But by now, Min-Gi has resolved to bring Ryan back by any means necessary. He loves Ryan dearly, but he can't be with him as the Flame King if it means he's at risk of death everytime they do anything beyond hugging and handholding. He drives himself mad trying to find a way to undo Ryan's curse.
